Methylprednisolone is a glucocorticoid. Glucocorticoids are adrenocortical steroids, both naturally occurring and synthetic, which are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Methylprednisolone occurs as a white to practically white, odorless, crystalline powder. It is sparingly soluble in alcohol, in dioxane, and in methanol, slightly soluble in acetone, and in chloroform, and very slightly soluble in ether. It is practically insoluble in water.
Function:
1. Like most adrenocortical steroids, methylprednisolone is typically used for its anti-inflammatory effects;
2. Methylprednisolone is also prescribed for nonpenetrating spinal cord injuries;
3. Common uses include arthritis therapy and short-term treatment of bronchial inflammation or acute bronchitis due to various respiratory diseases;
4. Methylprednisolone can also used for vestibular neuritis;
5.Methylprednisolone irreversibly binds with glucocorticoid receptors (GR) alpha and beta for which they
have a high affinity.
